About us
A non-profit volunteer organisation, the Canberra Skateboarding Association (CSA) reformed by Luke Brown in December of 2007 following on from the work of Matthew Chamberlain and Phil Dalton. Since then the CSA successfully lobbied the Federal and ACT government for a new facility for Canberra (Eddison Park) and the surrounding region as well as to both upgrade and maintain existing facilities.
We have helped coordinate a number of successful events for the youth and skateboarders of Canberra including the infamous “Belco Bowl Jam” and The “Garema Place Game of Skate” and several other successful events and competitions at various skate parks.
In February 2008 the CSA submitted the “Recreation for Canberra” document to the Chief Minister and received acknowledgement. It surveyed 60 skateboarders and their views on possible new facilities and upgrades to Belconnen and Tuggeranong. It also included research on current facilities in the context of design and construction progression in Australia. This was the driver for the Eddison Park project to be selected for allocation of community infrastructure funding from the Commonwealth Government a year later in February 2009. The new facility was completed in October of 2009 and has been heavily utilised since then. Eddison park saw more international touring demonstrations of skateboarding in it’s first year than had occurred in Canberra for many years prior. Eddison Park also saw Canberra being included in the National Am Series for the first time in 10 years which is testament to a skatepark having the relevant elements to meet this criteria. The CSA also coordinated a petition for upgrades to the Belconnen skate park that received attention in the context of the Emu bank project. Since then the Belconnen skatepark has seen a massive facelift (youtube video) with a design by Convic and build by Concrete Skate Parks. At it’s time of completion in 2011, Belco was the largest skatepark in the Southern Hemisphere! This is a huge achievement for Canberra. See also Belco Upgrade
Developing through Skateboarding Australia:
In 2012 the Skateboarding Australia ACT Hub was created, jointly funded by the Australian Sports Commission and Sport and Recreation ACT Government. They have been successful in running a huge program of FREE “Streetwise” Learn to skateboard clinics, competitions and events across Canberra’s skateparks with the support of local skateshops Shifty’s and Trilogy.
In 2013 the ACT Hub increased it’s program of FREE clinics and events with the support of the above, as well as participating in supporting the Centenary of Canberra. The ACT Hub provides employment opportunities for skateboarders who want to learn coaching and events management. The ACT Hub provides a development path for skateboarders to progress linking with the SbA Am Series and Pro/Am Events.
