Belco upgrade August
Tenders for the Project Manager and Design Consultancy have now closed. They will be announced shortly.
The Canberra Skateboarding Association has put together a collaborated document based on the years of consultation that have occurred regarding the Belconnen Skatepark. The document contains researched and referenced details that aim to assist the process of the Belconnen upgrade. It identifies the key themes that make up the existing Belconnen design and suggests new options in line with these themes that are current with developments in skatepark technologies and maintenance. It acknowledges the success of the park being able to last for twenty years and still remain utilised, as well as welcoming this opportunity for its redevelopment.
The document has been formally submitted to the
Minister for Territory and Municipal Services for consideration.

NEW BELCONNEN SKATE PARK AND LAKESHORE UPGRADES
Published: June 3, 2010, 11:06 am
Section: Jon Stanhope, MLA | Media Releases
Belconnen residents will benefit from a $4.2 million investment by the Rudd Labor Government and ACT Government for a new skate park near the Eastern Valley Way Inlet in Belconnen and upgrades to the adjacent foreshore.
Parliamentary Secretary, the Hon Maxine McKew and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope inspected the site of the project today, which is expected to support up to 24 jobs during construction of the skate park, and as many as 50 jobs over the life of the project.
“This joint Federal and ACT Government project will deliver a brand new, state-of-the-art facility for skateboarders and BMX riders to replace the existing skate park, and improvements to the adjacent foreshore area, which is a popular recreation spot for Belconnen families,” Mr Stanhope said.
“The skate park is part of a wider $7.7 million foreshore redevelopment that will see the Lake Ginninderra foreshore refreshed in the coming years with new shaded seating areas, a drinking fountain, boardwalks, and paths for cyclists. New lighting will ensure the skate park and surrounding area can be enjoyed in greater safety and with greater confidence by Belconnen residents, for more hours of the day.”
“I commend the Rudd Labor Government for providing funding for this important community infrastructure project.”
Ms McKew said the Commonwealth’s $2 million contribution was part of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which is delivering a record $1 billion for nearly 5,000 projects across the nation.
“This project is about creating jobs in the local economy today while delivering lasting benefits for the Belconnen community,” Ms McKew said.
“Across Australia, we are building and modernising community facilities, including town halls, libraries, community centres and sportsgrounds.
“The Rudd Labor Government is partnering with all levels of government – state, territory and local to support the economy while building community infrastructure for the future.”
Mr Stanhope said planning was also under way for improvements to the water quality in the Eastern Valley Way Inlet.
Belco designs
Belco upgrades seemed to have ground to a halt but funds have been allocated in the 2010 – 2011 budget of $200,000 for design aspects: “This initiative provides design work for the potential future expansion of the existing Eastern Valley Way skate park to national competition level, including new elements such as street skating.”
Looks like it will be a slow process. http://www.treasury.act.gov.au/budget/budget_2010/files/paper3/14capini.pdf p19 (or p147 of Treasury Paper for Capital Initiatives)
